What is Overtone and can I get it out of my Hair?
It is very important to understand that Overtone is not a hair dye. Therefore it is not a permanent color. It is a semi-permanent color, meaning it only contains pigments. No peroxide, no ammonia, no heavy alcohols.
This means if any color will be in your hair by Overtone pigments it is washable. However, this is totally depending on the type and color of your hair. Let me explain this a little more.
A little hair-school lesson for you right here: try to remember that black hair has the most pigments existing in hair, blond hair has the least.
So making your hair darker, is putting in pigments, making your hair lighter is removing pigments, better known as bleaching.
Using Overtone on naturally black hair, I can tell you right now, will NOT bring much effect if any at all!
Using Overtone on naturally blond hair, however, has the totally opposite effect and can definitely turn blue, purple, pink, or whatever color you put in there.
Although it is washable, it will most certainly be very very visible, and even hard to get out, especially if your blond hair was damaged before. There are ways to get it out, but first, let us try to understand Overtone a little more.
Overtone Coloring Conditioner
So in the Amazon Overtone Shop, you can see that there are two different conditioners. Overtone Coloring Conditioner has the most pigments and can, depending on your hair, change your hair color.
The best way I think you should use Overtone Coloring Conditioner is to keep your dyed hair bright and colorful.
Every hair color, even dyed will fade, this goes for vibrant colors like pink and purple but also for normal hair colors like auburn or a warm chestnut for example.
To help your hair hold the color better you could and should use hair care products with pigments like Overtone. Overtone Coloring Conditioners come in the colors:
- Blue
- Ginger
- Purple
- Rose Gold
- Rose Gold for brown hair
- Vibrant Purple
- Vibrant Teal
You could use Overtone as your main coloring but I wouldn’t recommend it. If you really want a nice beautiful color for your hair I always recommend going to a good hair professional and dye.
Overtone Toning Conditioner
This conditioner is created to color correct unwanted undertones and brassiness. So if your hair is too yellow, you use the purple conditioner.
This can work very well, again to maintain your exiting color, not as the main coloring.

How to get Overtone out of your Hair
If you want to get rid of Overtone or any other toner or unwanted color in your hair for whatever reason, sh*t gone wrong used the wrong color/product, or just fed up with it, there are a few ways to go about it.
- Go somewhere really sunny, near a beach to swim in salt water and a pool to swim somemore inthere too.
- Wash your hair extensively.
- Bleach bath.
Bleach Bath
Let’s start with the most effective one but the most damaging one too. This is not quite good for your hair, but it will sure as hell work pretty darn good.
You can go about a bleach bath two ways, one is with a developer but you can also just use bleach powder and shampoo.
Just bleach powder and plain regular shampoo will already take out so many pigments it’s crazy, I suggest you try it first without a developer.
You can also just try a little pinch of bleach powder at first if you are really worried about damaging your hair. This is how it works:
- Take a normal amount of shampoo and mix this with bleach powder. More powder means stonger effect.
- Wash your hair with this mixure.
- Do NOT leave it in, just keep washing and keep looking in the mirror. WATCH OUT for your eyes, be very carefull. Try to avoid the scalp as much as possible.
- You will see the color fading, it can go really quike, it can smell pretty chemical, thats because it is. This is actual bleach.
- Whenever your happy with the color rinse out well. Don’t leave it in longer then 10 min though, your hair is always darker when it’s wet.
- Shampoo and condition like normal
If this does not work, I would consider going to a professional but you could also try to do a bleach bath with a 20 vol developer. Remember that this is exactly the same as full-on bleaching just with the addition of a shampoo.
- Take equal amount of bleach powder and 20 vol developer
- Add shampoo to this mix
- Wash your hair the same way as discribed above.
This WILL take out any pigment including your own natural hair pigments if you leave it on too long. You will almost certainly need a toner or other color treatment after this, again maybe it’s best left to the professionals.
Wash your hair Extensively
Overtone is not a dye if your wash your hair all day every day it will fade out eventually.
You can help this process along by using Head and Shoulders, the shampoo that is called the over-the-counter-drug-shampoo by cosmetic chemists.
Commonly known to take out pigments from hair, it works really well for this actually.
I wouldn’t use laundry detergent to wash out color, that is just silly and not necessary, Head and Shoulders will do the trick if not even better.
Overtone even got The Fader Shampoo, according to YouTube it works as well as Head and Shoulders just not as bad for your hair. More expensive though. Strangely enough, I couldn’t find Overtone The Fader Shampoo on Amazon.
Sun, Sea, Swimmingpool
Then, of course, you could always go on a holiday where there is lots of sun and swimming. This is the most natural way to lose color pigments from your hair and the most fun way too, obviously. Honey, we need to go to Hawai again I don’t like this Overtone Color anymore.
FAQ
- Does Overtone wash out completely: Not in every single case. It depends on many things, like how long have your used it, what color did you use, on what color hair, the quality of your hair and so on.
- How long does it take for Overtone to wash out of blonde hair? It could be anywhere from 6 to 30 washes. However blond hair has the least amount of pigments so it could absorb alot especially if it’s damaged blond hair. Again it all depents on the circumstances.
- Can I dye my hair after using Overtone? Yes you can dye your hair after using Overtone.
