Hi Amiga, it is so exciting to tell you the secrets you need to know to justify spending (even) more on what type of cosmetic products you need, but more importantly, what products you can SAVE money on!
Both as an artist and as a Beauty Lover. Why can you get a foundation for 10 bucks going up to over a 100? Why wouldn’t I just stuff my kit and, or beauty case with cheap makeup brands?

In this post, I will tell you all about the difference between cheap makeup and expensive makeup. Why can prices be so low or so high?
The difference between Cheap vs Expensive Makeup products and Brands
Can I just stick with the cheap makeup brands? You certainly can if you are not a professional makeup artist working B2B. The difference between cheap and expensive makeup up is the formula.
While the formula of each product differs slightly, most cosmetics contain a combination of at least some of the following core ingredients: water, emulsifier, preservative, thickener, emollient, color, fragrance, and pH stabilizers. Source: https://www.science.org.au/
The difference is that the expensive brands use higher quality ingredients.
You also pay a certain amount for the packaging. High-end expensive makeup do have better quality, but why would a brand use more expensive ingredients if they could pull it off with cheaper ingredients?
Because the makeup will stay on the face longer under and in a lot of circumstances, require less product. So basically you can use less and it will stay on longer!!! Even under studio lighting.
With this, the brands provide professionals exactly what we need. That is why it is absolutely necessary to use high-end makeup products when you work B2B as a professional makeup artist. Imagine makeup disappearing by the heat of the spotlights in a TV studio on the national 8 o’clock news. You can pack your stuff and never come back.
Although it will never even reach the studio in the first place, because TV hosts and models know perfectly well which products work well on TV and through photos.
They are in makeup every day, on your first day meeting them they will scan your kit before they even come and sit in your chair. You can already leave before ever having the chance to start.
Seriously, I am not kidding, this is how it goes down. And rightly so, it is your job as a professional to know the difference and pick your products carefully.
However, this mainly applies to foundations, powders, eyeshadows, and brow products. For lip products, eyeliners, lashes, mascara, skincare, makeup wipes, blush, maybe even contour and highlight products, you could use cheaper brands perfectly fine, just make sure you’ve tested them on yourself will do.
The cheaper brands are getting better and better too, even some eyeshadows are pretty darn good nowadays.
Can I create the same look?
It is certainly possible to create the exact same look with cheap vs expensive makeup. It just won’t last in the bright lights of a studio, but it will do fine for your day at the office.
Although you would need more foundation (which for me would change the look already), but it would definitely look very similar.
Knowing that, if going to work, for you doesn’t mean presenting the 8 o’clock news, then technically you could use any type of makeup you want, you will look similar.
I do recommend spending a little more on foundation if you can (find out the best value for your money foundation). Really anything other than that you could use perfectly well and look and feel amazing.
In the case of low-budget makeup, bring your products in your purse because it will need loads of touch-ups. With layer on layer all day long, don’t forget to clean your face before going to bed.
Cheap vs Expensive Cosmetics on Clients
If you are a makeup artist doing private makeup for parties and outings, you could also use cheaper brands. Just know it will last your clients less long, so advise your clients to touch it up during the event.
They pay you less than a business would, so to me it would make sense you work with less expensive products.
I would not recommend using cheaper products on a bride, because bridal makeup should last the whole day. On top of that, it needs to photograph well in daylight too and they pay you more anyway.
Tip: definitely offer the service of you coming along for the wedding for touch-ups, it is a common service for high-end bridal makeup artists.
