Makeup Artist Salary’s around the Globe
If you are looking to start out as a Makeup Artist is it good to know on forehand what you could be making. If you choose to work self-employed you can set your prices according to these statistics.
The benefits of self-employment are that you can bring up your prices according to your experience. I recommend never to start too low and never start too high. Hence start at Median.
If you work in-store or in-salon you will make wages of store and salon salary which typically are much lower, therefore, in my opinion, it is better to be a self-employed Makeup Artist.
Or if you starting out, do both, in-store and in-salon are really good for your experience.
You can work part-time in-store or in-salon on the side, you get a pretty good discount on the brand your working for most of the time too.
Creating your invoice
When I am creating my invoice, I charge the time I am traveling to the job as an hourly wage, so if I am traveling 1 hour and 30 min, I charge one and a half hours, I recommend you to do the same.
This is because the time you are traveling to a job you can’t be somewhere else earning money and you’re a business, not a charity.
In the Netherlands working B2B, it is the norm that a client is obligated to take a minimum of 4 hours.
Even if it only takes you an hour to do the makeup and you can leave after that, they still have to pay you for the 4 hours, in this case, you don’t charge the time you travel to the job, travel hours are included in those 4 hours. It is recommended to do the same.
The reason why we obligate the client to take at least 4 hours, again it’s because you are not a charity.
You can’t do 8 different jobs in 8 different locations in one day, to make yourself a full-time day, therefore we charge half day or full day prices.
Some artists even only charge half or full days, meaning for example when a job is 6 hours, they charge a full 8-hour day rate, because you can’t really take any other job after that 6-hour job, so it does make sense.
However, artists doing this, already have strong relationships with their clients working years with them (20/30 years is not uncommon).
It is up to you, it’s your business, I am 5 years in the B2B field at this point, therefore I don’t do that, in that case, I charge 6 hours plus my time to travel to the job.
You also charge your kilometers/miles. The norm here is €0,19 or €0,22 per kilometer.
